Structure of Import and Export in the 2007 Plastic Cap Market

PLASTIC CAP IMPORT

Since an entirely new design of plastic caps with pull-out tubular dispensers appeared in the Russian market, imported products have constituted the largest share, although the percentage of imported caps in the Russian market is decreasing year in year out. In 2004, for instance, their share constituted 85.9%, in 2005 – 81.8%, and in 2007 – 81.1%.

Despite production growth in the past few years, the market is dominated by imported products. Foreign companies offer a wider range of caps, production of which does not exist in Russia.

Russian producers of alcoholic beverages need imported caps, and Russian manufacturers cannot meet their demand yet.

Throughout 2004-2007, the volume of import of plastic caps was growing in kind. In 2005 their import increased by 20.4%, in 2006 – by 21.2%, and in 2007 – by 10.6%.

The maximum volume of the 2007 import – over 368.9 million plastic caps – came from China. The share of Italy constituted 17.8%. Smaller suppliers were Hungary, Finland, Germany, Spain, the Czech Republic and Lithuania, which accounted for about 43.5%. The group of “other” included countries whose share did not exceed 1.5% of the import.

In 2004-2007 no substantial changes took place in the rating of supplier countries. China remained the leader throughout the three years, strengthening its positions steadily. A sufficiently large supplier was Italy. However, it is worth mentioning that the share of Chinese-made caps decreased in the total volume of the 2007 import. It dropped to 23% while in the previous years it constituted half of the import.
The structure of the plastic cap import can be viewed from two different positions, namely, their diameter and height. No essential changes took place in the import structure in 2004-2007.
Caps of the following diameters were imported: 31.5 mm and 40 mm. Plastic caps 31.5 mm in diameter accounted for the largest share of the import – 97%. Caps 40 mm in diameter constituted the remaining 3% of the import. The structure of imported plastic caps with breakdown by their diameter is presented in Diagram

Structure of the plastic cap import with breakdown by height

Only high caps are imported into Russia; they permit to cover the dispenser used in them and are also more aesthetically attractive. The most widespread are caps 47 and 58 mm high. The import of 47-mm caps constitutes 37% of the total volume of import, while 58-mm caps account for 17%. Caps 55, 57, 59 and 49 mm high constitute approximately 10% each. The most rarely used height is 60 mm (5% of the import – 16.19 million pieces). The diameter of such caps is 40 mm. The structure of the plastic cap import with breakdown by their height is presented in Diagram 10.

PLASTIC CAP EXPORT

The volume of the plastic cap export from Russia is growing by more than 5% annually. In 2005, its growth constituted 5.0%, in 2006 – 6.9%, and in 2007 – 5.7%.
In 2007, the maximum volume of export went to Kazakhstan: 14 million plastic caps were exported to that country. Kazakhstan’s share in the export constituted 53.7%. Georgia, Ukraine, Armenia and Kirgizia were smaller recipients of plastic caps with a total share of about 30.3%. The group of “other” included countries whose share did not exceed 4% of the export.

The structure of the plastic cap export, like that of their import, can be viewed from two positions: their diameter and height.
In 2004-2007, no changes took place in the export structure by diameter. Caps 31.5 mm in diameter were mostly exported. No essential changes took place in the export structure by height. The most widespread were caps 47 and 58 mm high. Caps 47 mm high constituted about 44% of the export, while caps 58 mm and 55 mm high accounted for about 25% and 13% respectively. Caps 57 mm, 59 mm and 49 mm high accounted for approximately 6-8% of the total volume of export.
